Munnar is the most sought after tourist destination 120 kilometers away from Cochin International Airport. Nestled in the lap of lush Western Ghats, this hill station is famous for its nice climate and the ever stretching tea plantations over the hills. The history of Munnar dates backs to British era where they cleared the virgin forests to make tea plantations that stretch across thousands of acres.

There are many places to see in Munnar namely Pothamedu view point, Eravikulam National Park, Mattuppetty dam, Echo point, Kundala dam etc.

Munnar is a preferred destination for honeymooners especially form north India. There are many optional available for nature lovers like trekking through the grasslands, stay inside the jungle etc. most of the activities are conducted by the forest department of Kerala. Elephant safari, high speed boating, camping etc. are some of the popular activities at Munnar.

Neelakurinji, the flower that blooms once in 12 years is a famous attraction for visitors all around the world. The hills would be carpeted with the violet flowers and the next time this will occur is 2030.

Eravikulam National park spread across 97 sq.kms is the home for Nilgiri Thars. The view from the peak of the park is an amazing one.

The best time to visit Munnar is from September till February

Weather - most of the time, Munnar has pleasant weather but, extreme low temperature is witnessed during December.

Best time to visit - Though tourist visit Munnar throughout the year, September to February is the best time to visit this hill station.

  • Top Station

    This is one of the top points in Munnar, 1 kms off from Munnar - Kodaikanal road, top station offers most amazing views of Tamilnadu that stretches far off and covered by cloud. The approach road to this attraction is in bad shape. Please do keep in mind that this might not be advisable to use this road during monsoon as the boulders could be slippery.

  • Tea Museum

    The tea museum is owned and operated by none other than the Tata Tea Limited. The history of tea in Munnar dates back to 1800 when British cleared the rain forests to plant the tea saplings. The museum includes many historical things like a rail engine wheel used in Munnar, tea roller used in 1920s etc. There is a tea tasting room close to the museum. You can also see rare photos dates back to the Brits, a model tea manufacturing unit etc. A must visit place for those love to see the history of Munnar.

  • Mattuppetty Dam

    Mattupetty is known for 2 things. The first one is the Indo Swiss project where high quality cow breeds are researched. As a tourist, the main attraction is the Mattupetty dam where speed and high speed boating is available for the travelers. The lake is created for the hydro electric project. During the boat ride, you might see wild elephants grazing through shores. Such amazing views are not that rare at this place. The Echo point is just 5 kilometers away from the dam.

  • Pothemedu View Point

    Pothamedu is yet another highest point in Munnar. Almost 8 kilometers away from town, Pothamedu is less explored destination in Munnar due to the bad roads that leads here. But, believe us, the journey is worth taking. The view of the mist covered valleys is just awesome. The vehicles you see down below look like the ants. There are many good resorts with great views.

  • Kundala Dam

    An extension of Mattuppetty dam, Kundala is a peaceful place to sit down and enjoy the serine nature. There are raw boats and pedal boats. Horse riding is yet another attraction. The shops that sell souvenirs, dolls and fresh vegetables are just around the corner. Take a photo with these shops in backdrop. Believe us; you are clicking for an ever memorable photo!

  • Eravikulam National Park aka Rajamala

    15 kilometers off to Munnar, Rajamala is the home for the endangered Nilgiri Thars. It is also the place where the Neelakurinji that blooms once in 12 years. You can reach the top of the park on a van arranged by the Forest department. The view from the top is breathtaking.

  • Kolukkumalai Jeep Safari

    How about going for a jeep safari to one of the highest peak in Munnar during the early morning? Get ready for some excitement. Kolukkumalai is around 45 kilometers away from town and is the home of the organic tea plantations. The jeep safari is bit difficult, thanks to the road (if we can call it a road). But, the effort is worth taking. Witness the most magnificent sun rise. Visit the tea factory and understand how they still use the orthodox method to produce the finest organic tea in the world. Sip a cup of hot tea and head back to Munnar.

By Air - Cochin is the nearest airport and is 120 kilomters away. Cabs are easily available from the airport.

Train - Aluva/Alwaye is the nearest railway station which is 110 kilometers away from Munnar. Madhurai & Ernakulam railway stations are also close to Munnar.

Bus - Munnar is well connected by road with all the towns in Kerala. KSRTC operates regular buses to Munnar from cities like Ernakulam, Trivandrum, Chennai & Bangaloru.
